Physicians have relied on computerized axial tomography scans (CAT) for many years. CAT scans are an X-ray procedure that uses many different X-ray images with the help of computers to generate cross-sectional or even three dimensional (3D) views of internal organs and structures within the body. A knee replacement surgery, for example, would never be performed without first examining 3D imaging. More recently however, new technology has been developed that provides 3D imaging at a greatly reduced radiation exposure and cost compared to medical CAT scans. This technology is called Cone Beam CT and dentists have begun to rely on these 3D imaging techniques to provide them with a detailed view of the mouth and skull. The advantage that 3D imaging holds over regular dental x-rays is that bone structure, bone density, tissues, and nerves can be viewed clearly. Cone Beam CT scans can be completed in less than half a minute. This means that far less radiation enters the body than if a regular set of bitewing X-rays were taken. The main use for CT scans is as an aid to plan dental implant treatment and other oral surgery. ### CT scans and Dental implants Dental implants are the most sophisticated replacement for missing teeth, but have historically proven to be time-consuming to place. CT scans vastly reduce the time it takes to place implants due to the ability of the dentist to see the anatomy of the implant site before any surgery is done and to plan accordingly. ### How does the CT scan help our Staff? CT scans are quick and simple to perform. A Cone Beam Imaging System is at the heart of the scanner. During the scan, the patient stands or sits stationary on a designated seat. The cone beams are used to take literally hundreds of pictures of the face. These pictures are used to compile an exact 3D image of the inner mechanisms of the face and jaw. The dentist is able to zoom in on specific areas and view them from alternate angles. Transcript hi I'm Katrina zish for Howdini today we're going to talk about how to brush your teeth joining me to do that is cosmetic dentist Dr Brian caner nice to see you Doctor nice to see you so I think some people might think okay brushing my teeth this is very Elementary but other people might think there are so many new technologies is there something new to learn no there's nothing new to learn it's very basic it's the most important way to keep your hygiene brushing your teeth twice a day in the correct way 2 minutes twice a day okay now do you brush differently with a manual brush versus a power brush yes a manual brush you actually have to do all the work whereas a power brush does a lot of the work for you all you have to do is guide the toothbrush in the right area as the power brush actually will oscillate and get to all the hard to reach places you just have to guide the toothbrush you don't want to put too much pressure because the toothbrush is doing work for you now what's the right way to use a power toothbrush well a power brush you have to read the instructions on the power brush you use because everyone is different they all have bells and whistles on it what you're supposed to do is each quadrant should be brushed for 30 seconds so some of them have a timer for 30 seconds for each quadrant a total of 2 minutes some just have a timer for 2 minutes if you're putting too much pressure on the teeth there can be an alarm that goes off so you have to really read the instructions on on your powered toothbrush so the most important thing is you want to actually have a 45 degree angle from the toothbrush to the gums so at a 45° to the gums and you're just going to hold it in place whereas the power brush is going to do all the work for you so you're going to guide it tooth by tooth and you want to make sure you spend 30 seconds per quadrant and after you do the outsides of the teeth you're then going to go to the insides at a 45 with the gum and also the biting surfaces so there's three surfaces that you have to get after you did all four quadrants you then also want to have brush your tongue by brushing the tongue it also gets away some food particles and some bacteria that can cause bad breath okay now what if I'm using a manual toothbrush a manual toothbrush requires a little more energy uhoh and there's no timer on here so it takes a little a little responsibility make sure you're going to do it for 2 minutes same thing 45° angle no pressure into the gums you're going to put the toothbrush on the teeth at a 45 degree angle to the gum you're going to go back and forth slightly and away from the gums back and forth slightly away from the gums three teeth at a time not putting too much pressure on the gums but having the bristles go into the sulcus just to get some uh underneath the gums same thing on the inside away from the gums you want to go from the gums away from the gums after have to do the outside the inside you want to do the the clusel surface or the biting surface getting all the food particles out and after you do the quadrant go to the anterior teeth and you're going to turn the brush upside down and go from the gums up light short strokes and up same thing all all four quadrant after you do all four quadrants you want to brush your tongue for a fresh minty taste fantastic now how often should we be brushing our teeth minimum of twice a day ideally after every meal because the food particles that remain in your teeth can accumulate bacteria that bacteria can cause bad breath can cause gingivitis so you want to keep your te your teeth as healthy and clean as possible so ideally after every meal but realistically twice a day okay and let's talk about toothbrushes how long should my toothbrush last the most important thing about toothbrushes make sure you use a soft toothbrush if I didn't reate that but toothbrushes when they start fraying it's time for a new toothbrush usually they last anywhere from 2 to 3 months but that really depends on you so when it starts fraying it's time to get a new toothbrush some of these toothbrushes actually are colorcoded and when the color starts going away it tells you it's time for a new brush okay well thanks so much for making us smile better and teaching us how to brush our teeth even though all of us should already know that but it's definitely good to brush up on your Technique okay let's recap brush for 2 minutes that's 30 seconds for each of the four sections of your mouth don't forget your tongue follow the recommendations from your dentist for the correct brushing technique for you on behalf of Crest Pro Health and Oral B I'm Katrina zish for Howdini for more information check out the website When brushing, it is important to use toothpaste that contains fluoride. We may also use a rubber dam to protect your mouth while we work. Then, we remove any decay and shape the tooth with a handpiece. Next, we'll take an impression of your teeth. The lab uses the impression to make a model of your mouth. They'll use the model to create a crown that precisely fits your tooth and bite. In the meantime, we often place a temporary crown. On your next visit, we remove the temporary and try in your new porcelain crown. We check the fit and when everything looks good, we bond or cement the crown in place. A porcelain crown has several advantages. It covers and protects the tooth. It's strong and durable. And the porcelain has the lielike translucency of natural teeth. When you need a crown, porcelain crowns are a natural looking choice. A dental crown is tooth-shaped cap that is permanently cemented over a tooth, in order to restore the tooths strength, shape and size, and improve its appearance. The crown will cover the visible portion of the tooth above and right at the gum line, once it is cemented into place. During the second visit, dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the finished permanent crown onto the tooth. Crowns generally last about five to eight years, and with good oral hygiene most crowns last longer. Certain habits such as fingernail biting, chewing ice, and grinding teeth can do damage to the crown, and should be avoided. ## What are Dental Bridges Transcript When teeth are missing, a fixed bridge is a good choice for replacing them. A bridge can prevent a chain reaction of problems, including shifting teeth, difficulty keeping teeth free of plaque and bacteria, loss of bone in the jaw, difficulty chewing, grinding and clenching, and pain in the jaw joint, the TMJ. When you lose a tooth, the biting forces change on the teeth next to the space, and they begin to shift. And since the opposing tooth no longer has anything to chew against, it begins to extrude out of its socket. These changes create places around the teeth that are hard to keep clean, so plaque and bacteria quickly accumulate. This accumulation can cause tooth decay and periodontal disease. Changes in the bite can also put improper chewing forces on the shifted teeth, and this can lead to loose teeth and loss of jawbone, especially when periodontal disease is already present in your mouth. An uneven bite makes it harder to chew your food, and may lead to grinding and clenching. A bad bite can also create painful problems with your jaw joint, the TMJ. To determine if a bridge is right for you, we'll perform a thorough examination to make sure that the surrounding teeth can provide a strong foundation for the bridge. The exam often includes taking x-rays and probing around the teeth to check for periodontal disease. There are several kinds of bridges, so we'll talk with you about the best type for your situation. A bridge replaces missing teeth, and it's a great way to maintain a stable bite and restore your smile. Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth in your mouth. Dental bridges are fixed, in that they are cemented on the supporting teeth, or in some cases fixed on the dental implant that has been placed next to the missing teeth.  ## Importance of Replacing the Missing Teeth Replacing the missing teeth will restore your ability to properly chew and speak besides its cosmatic advantage; in addition the space caused by the missing teeth may allow the surrounding teeth to shift into that space. This shifting could cause a misalignment in your bite that can result in problems with your jaw joint. These shifted teeth are harder to clean, making them more susceptible to gum disease, decay or even additional tooth loss. ## The Dental Bridge Treatment It normally takes two or more visits for your dentist to complete your bridge. On your first visit the supporting teeth, which are typically the ones on either side of the missing tooth, are prepared. This is done to make room for the crowns that will slide over the supporting teeth. These crowns also serve as holders of the pontic, which is the missing tooth’s replacement. Next, an impression of the supporting teeth is made so a dental laboratory can custom fit the bridge. Finally a temporary dental bridge is inserted to protect the supporting teeth as well as the space between them. On your second visit the permanent bridge is placed and adjusted to insure proper fit and function.  If the fit of the bridge is satisfactory your dentist will proceed with permanently cementing the bridge into place. ## Dental Bridge Post Treatment Expectations After the successful completion of the bridge you may feel some discomfort, mild pain when biting or sensitivity to temperature changes for a few days. As advised by your dentist, you can take over-the-counter pain medicine, such as Advil that contains ibuprofen, to alleviate the discomfort. Transcript When a tooth needs a restoration, a composite resin filling can be a good choice. First, we numb the area to make you comfortable. We may also use a rubber dam to protect your mouth while we work. Then, we remove any decay and shape the tooth with a handpiece. To mold the filling to the shape of the tooth, we may first surround it with a thin flexible band. A small wedge between the teeth holds the band snugly in place. Then we apply a solution that chemically etches the tooth for a strong bond with the resin. Next, we carefully place the resin into the prepared tooth layer by layer. A special light is used to harden each layer. Then, we shape the filling and check the fit and your bite. Lastly, we give it a final polish. and you have your beautiful new restoration. A composite resin filling has several advantages. It protects the tooth. It's also strong and durable, so it withstands biting forces. And it's colored to match your tooth for a natural looking smile. Composite fillings consist of plastic and glass particles. After the decay in your tooth has been cleaned a cleansing gel is applied. Next a bonding solution is applied, finally followed by the composite filling material.
